New Fishing Season Rules: Simplifying Regulations for Sustainability
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is implementing a range of changes for the upcoming fishing season, aiming to simplify regulations and promote sustainable fishing practices. These changes, according to Justine Hasz, DNR Fisheries Management Bureau Director, are designed to make fishing more accessible and environmentally friendly.
One significant alteration is the introduction of a single muskie season opener, eliminating the previous split season approach. This move, Hasz explains, is part of the DNR's efforts to streamline regulations and ensure sustainable fishing practices for this prized species.
Catch and release for lake sturgeon will be permitted on select waters from June 6, 2026, through March 7, 2027. This regulation, Hasz notes, is a strategic decision to encourage the preservation of lake sturgeon populations, which are vital to the ecosystem.
Panfish regulations, including bag limits, will also be in effect during the season. Species-specific bag and length limits will apply to certain waters across the state, and anglers are advised to check if their fishing area is included in this list.
Hasz emphasizes the DNR's commitment to simplifying regulations while maintaining sustainability. "We aim to create a more straightforward and accessible fishing experience, ensuring that our fisheries remain healthy and productive for future generations," she said.
