A breathtaking celestial event unfolded over the skies of Wales, leaving an amateur astronomer in awe. The rare fireball meteor, a sight to behold, captured the imagination of many.
On the morning of January 4, 2026, Ed Williams, an experienced stargazer, witnessed a flaming meteor streak across the sky from his home in North Wales. Initially mistaking it for an aircraft, Ed quickly realized he was witnessing a remarkable phenomenon.
"I've always had a passion for stargazing, and I knew the weekend would offer a busy sky with the Wolf Moon and the Quadrantid meteor shower," Ed shared with us. However, the real spectacle awaited him the following morning.
"As I sipped my morning coffee on Sunday, I glanced out of my landing window and noticed a bright streak. It wasn't an ordinary plane trail; it looked like it was on fire!" Ed recalled.
With his expertise, Ed identified the phenomenon as a fireball meteor, distinct from a shooting star. "It was entering our atmosphere, flaming, and burning up as it descended. An unforgettable sight!" he exclaimed.
Fireballs, unlike ordinary shooting stars, are exceptionally bright meteors caused by larger space rocks entering Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds. As they burn, they create dazzling light shows and, in rare instances, can even produce explosions or shockwaves. Some fragments may survive the descent, landing on Earth as meteorites.
But here's where it gets controversial: Ed's timing was impeccable. After an unsuccessful stargazing session on Saturday night, he witnessed this extraordinary fireball right outside his window the next morning. "I feel incredibly lucky!" he exclaimed.
And this is the part most people miss: the celestial displays are far from over. The start of the year promises more stargazing delights. From January 1 to 12, the Quadrantid meteor shower will grace our skies, and on January 10, Jupiter will reach opposition, shining brightly throughout the night.
